Data Science, Electric Transportation, Design and More: Checklist of New Courses Launched by IITs This Year

Several new courses have been introduced by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) branches across the country. From BSc in Programming and Data Science at IIT-Madras and M. Tech in Electric Transport at IIT-Mandi to M. Tech in Electric Mobility and MS(R) in Transport Safety and Injury Prevention at IIT-Delhi, students can choose from a variety of courses.

Here is a list of some of the programs:


BSc in Programming and Data Science / BSc in Data Science and Applications

This program is delivered with an emphasis on developing programming skills and data science expertise. It has several exits with a fundamental certificate, one or both diplomas, the BSc or the BS. Students will become full-stack developers, proficient in Python and Java programming, DBMS, full-fledged application development and also well-versed in machine learning techniques, artificial intelligence, deep learning, Big Data and tools such as Power BI and Tableau, etc.

Classes can be taken according to convenience and time availability and the program can be paced by the student. Fees are also paid according to the courses registered. Although the content is offered online, the exams are all conducted in person at designated centers in over 130 cities inside and outside India.

Eligibility criteria: Anyone who has passed Class 12 or equivalent in any stream is eligible to apply. Mathematics and English should have been studied in class 10. Learners can also do another university degree and do it at the same time or be a working professional and study from it.

Four weeks of the content of four courses are taught by IIT Madras and a qualifying exam based on this is conducted. Students who pass a threshold of 50 points in total are eligible to continue studying in this program.


BS in Physics with Honors Program

The Department of Physics now offers an undergraduate program in Physics to attract highly motivated students interested in basic science and advanced technologies in the broad discipline of physics combined with engineering, and want a flexible program to consider a variety of challenging career paths. through capability-related specializations in advanced energy, photonics, quantum, and plasma technologies.

It will provide a solid foundation in the basic sciences and mathematics that are essential for the development of analytical thinking and will form the basis for the various tools used in fundamental and applied physics related to engineering problems to innovate, design and develop future technologies.

To be eligible, applicants must have passed Class 12 in the science stream and will be selected on the basis of their JEE Advanced score.


M. Tech in Electric Transportation (E-Transport)

IIT-Mandi launched a two-year master’s program in electric transport this year. This program was launched jointly by the School of Computing and Electrical Engineering (SCEE) and the School of Engineering (SE) of IIT Mandi and aims to focus on the demand for qualified personnel in the electric vehicle industry and the employment opportunities for young people.

Eligibility: For this course, a valid GATE score is required. Applicants must hold a qualified Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology with a minimum of first class marks or 60% overall marks (or an equivalent GPA) within four years from a recognized university with the following majors:

− B.Tech/BE
− Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE)/Electrical Engineering (EE)
− Mechanical Engineering (ME), Automotive, Production, Aeronautics
− Instrumentation and control
− Electronic and Communications Engineering (ECE)
− Associate member of professional bodies equivalent to B.Tech/BE in
the disciplines above


M. Tech in Electric Mobility

This new program is hosted by the Center for Automotive Research and Tribology (CART) at IIT-Delhi. It focuses only on concepts related to electric vehicles, drivetrain, chargers and charging infrastructure, battery energy storage systems, battery management system, cell reuse energy storage systems, reliability, automotive health monitoring, automotive NVH (noise, vibration and harshness), vehicle dynamics, autonomous and connected vehicles, vehicle telematics and materials for electric vehicles, as well as practical and laboratory design.

Eligibility Criteria: Candidates must have a four-year bachelor’s degree in one of these fields: Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Production Engineering, Mechatronics, Automotive, manufacturing/engineering. They must be GATE qualified in the disciplines of Electrical Engineering (EE) or Mechanical Engineering (ME) or Production and Industrial Engineering (PI).

Bachelor of Design

The Design Department will offer a full-time B.Des program, with the first batch to start in 2022-23. This program will be for four years and admission will be by UCEED score. The program offers courses in all major areas of design, such as product design, interaction design, and communication design, to name a few.

This year, 20 students were selected for the B.Des. Upon completion of this course, the graduate “become a responsible designer and is able to translate ideas into demonstrable solutions through the adoption of a human-centered design process,” reads an official memo from the company. ‘IIT Delhi.

Mr. Tech. in artificial intelligence and data science

The IIT-Delhi senate recently approved the MTech program in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (MINDS) offered by the Yardi School of Artificial Intelligence (ScAI). This will be an industry-sponsored program where students will be required to work on industry-relevant AI problems. The test and interviews for M.Tech/MSR/Ph.D. admissions will be done online.

The curriculum will include graduate-level courses in core AI technologies like deep learning and data science, application-focused courses like computer vision and natural language processing, and fundamental courses on the mathematics underlying modern AI technologies.

Eligibility: Four years B.Tech. / BE Diploma (first class) or any equivalent degree (e.g. BS from a foreign university and M.Sc., MCA or other Masters degrees obtained under a 3+2 model) in any engineering or scientific discipline. A valid GATE score would be necessary when such a requirement is not waived, such as for students of an IIT with a GPA exceeding a threshold. A strong interest and background in computational mathematics and programming is preferred.

MS(R) in Transportation Safety and Injury Prevention

The new Master of Science (Research) in Transportation Safety and Injury Prevention program was launched this year at the new center named the ‘Transportation Research and Injury Prevention Center (TRIP-C)’ by converting the ‘Transportation Research and Injury Prevention Center Prevention Program (TRIPP), which has been running at the Institute since 2002 as an interdisciplinary program.

The objective will be to produce cutting-edge knowledge to address road transport and road safety in India and regions with similar socio-economic conditions. Students will be trained in the field of transportation safety and will prepare students for research careers.

“The masters program will offer a unique mix of professionals from diverse backgrounds…to be trained with the knowledge needed to develop safe and sustainable mobility leading to improved overall human quality of life,” said K Ramachandra Rao, coordinator , TRIPP.

Mr. Tech. in biomolecular and bioprocess engineering

For the M.Tech. in the Biomolecular and Bioprocess Engineering program, applicants must at least hold a BE/B. Tech./ M.Sc. or equivalent degree in a particular discipline. The minimum duration for M. Tech./MS(R) programs is 4 semesters (24 months) for full-time programs and 6 semesters (36 months) for part-time programs.
