Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) recently launched WavyOcean – the first interactive marine environment visualization platform that offers an unprecedented level of ocean data in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau (GBA) Greater Bay Area, all of the China Seas and the Western Pacific Ocean.
The platform will greatly facilitate marine research work and offer valuable data for policymakers on finding a balance between marine conservation and societal development, such as the Lantau Tomorrow Vision Plan.
Using state-of-the-art numerical ocean simulations, the platform not only visualizes ocean processes, but also offers physical and biogeochemical data of the aforementioned oceans. Data available for download includes environmental variables such as 3D ocean current, temperature, salinity, nitrate levels, chlorophyll, dissolved oxygen; as well as atmospheric variables such as wind, temperature and pressure.
These comprehensive datasets offered on a one-stop-shop platform are intended to provide a solid foundation for research topics such as marine hydrodynamics, hazards, pollutions, ecosystems and climate change.
Professor GAN Jianping, a full professor in the Department of Ocean Science and the Department of Mathematics who led this research, said that collecting in situ ocean data is logistically difficult and very limited in space and time. , observational data in ocean science are scarce.
Therefore, the team developed the China Sea Multiscale Ocean Modeling System (CMOMS) and subsequently WavyOcean to cover the entire China Seas spatiotemporally. WavyOcean not only couples the ocean circulation with the ecosystem of the region but can also present visual and interactive 3D spatio-temporal variations for the transport of ocean energy and substances, the biogeochemical properties and the nature of the ecosystem .
“The platform itself is an innovative hub for ocean research and management while also being a source of information for the general public,” the professor said.
WavyOcean builds on a decade of research by Professor Gan and his interdisciplinary team, with support from the National Supercomputing Centers in Tianjin and Guangzhou. The WavyOcean project was supported by the Center for Ocean Research in Hong Kong and Macau (CORE), which was jointly established in 2019 by HKUST and the Qingdao Pilot National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology, as well as Ocean-HK, a project research sponsored by the Thematic Research Program of the Hong Kong University Grants Committee since 2017.
Through the continuous improvement of WavyOcean, policy makers and scientists will be able to better study and deploy marine resources, mitigate the impact of climate change and the potential effects that new policies such as Lantau Tomorrow Vision could bring to the marine ecosystem, Professor Gan said. .
“We hope the public can better understand the ocean at their fingertips and become more aware of the importance of protecting the ocean,” he said.
